  • Justin Lofton claims first place at Silver State in Class 1500 while finishing second overall.

Fort Mill, SC – May 10, 2013.  The Best In The Desert (BITD) Series visited Nevada for the third installment of the 2013 season as Team GT tackled the Silver State 300.  While this particular portion of the desert is noted for its dust, that didn’t slow down Justin Lofton in his 1500 buggy as he took the class win and came up just shy of the overall win.  Starting from the pole, Lofton maneuvered his way over the challenging terrain and put his General Grabbers to good use.  The durability of both the tires and the driver was evident as he crossed the line to the applause of many.

“The Grabbers worked great all race,” said Lofton.  “I bounced off of trees and rocks my whole stint trying to put some time on the rest of the field and had no trouble.  The course was awesome.  Casey (Folks) does a great job for all of us racers laying our courses that run through amazing country.”

As for the dust, Lofton’s qualifying run, and subsequent run at the front of the field, helped to curb that.

“Dust was no issue for us.”  He continued, “I focused really hard on getting that top spot in qualifying to help alleviate that challenge.”

Lofton’s run at Silver State puts him solidly in the top spot for the BITD Class 1500 points championship.  So how does Lofton approach the remaining three races?  “My plan is to keep going after maximum points every race.”  He continued, “Making sure to make it to the finish line and being in front of as many of our competitors as possible.”

Team GT captured two spots on the Class 1500 podium with Lofton in first and Garrick Freitas in third.  Freitas also finished fifth overall.  In 6100 competition, Camburg Racing’s Jerry Whelchel and Mike Childress raced to a second-place finish and currently hold the top spot in the point’s championship.  The Azunia team of Jim Riley and Rick L. Johnson finished third in 6100.

Lofton wasn’t the only Team GT member to capture a win on Red Letter Grabbers, Macrae Glass took the top spot in 8000 racing while Banning Motorsports won the 1100 Class.  And in 7200 competition, Randy Merritt finished second with Sean Backus on his tail in third to round out the podium.

The BITD Series returns to action at the General Tire Vegas to Reno race August 15-17.  Last year, Freitas took the overall win on 35” DOT approved Grabbers.  Can he repeat this year?  Stay tuned.
